Abstract

Context and Purpose: One of the most important issues in tourism geography is the spatial distribution phenomena related to tourism activity. Hotels are perhaps the only aspect of the urban tourism product of which tourists are virtually the only consumers. The purpose of this research is to explore and investigate the distribution models and spatial structure of hotels in the tourist cities of Isfahan, Yazd, and Shiraz.
Design/methodology/approach: In this research, spatial data of hotels, spatial statistics methods of Global Moran's Index (GMI), and Local Moran's Index (LMI) have been used.
Findings: The results show that three major touristic cities of Iran all follow the historical development model. In terms of spatial statistics, using the GMI, the spatial pattern of hotel distribution was tested; The results of the test showed that the spatial pattern of the hotel is distributed in clusters. Also, the results of LMI of spatial clusters with high-high patterns are concentrated in C.B.D.
Conclusion: This spatial pattern creates advantages for other hotels in the vicinity of each other. According to this cluster distribution of hotels, proper planning for organizing tourism services and demand management may have a significant improvement in the experience of travelers and promotion of the tourism industry of historical and tourist cities.
Originality/value: In this research, considering the spatial dimensions, for the first time in the country, the spatial structure of hotels in tourist and historical cities has been explored and investigated.
