Abstract

Context and Purpose: Rail tourism, as a form of sustainable tourism, enables the reduction of energy consumption and environmental impacts. This study aims to develop rail-based tourism along the Tabriz–Jolfa railway corridor, enhance the quality of life, increase the potential of railways as a tourism product, and reduce environmental pollution.
Design/methodology/approach: This study is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical in terms of method. It utilizes documentary, library, and field studies. The Gunn model and Likert scale method were used for data analysis. The temporal scope of the research spans the years 2021 to 2024. Key indicators examined in this study include access to tourism infrastructure, economic impacts, reduction in environmental pollution, and effects on the sustainable development of rural settlements.
Findings: The results indicate that the Tabriz–Jolfa railway corridor holds significant potential for tourism development. Key attractions along this route include St. Stepanos Monastery, the Aras River, the Jolfa border market, and rural areas. However, challenges such as a shortage of dedicated tourism train carriages, weak marketing strategies, and insufficient private sector investment were identified. As the only electrified railway in Iran, the Tabriz–Jolfa railway provides a suitable infrastructure for sustainable tourism development.
Conclusion: The study suggests that increasing collaboration between the public and private sectors, implementing comprehensive marketing strategies, and improving tourism infrastructure, such as enhancing station facilities, are essential for developing rail-based tourism along this corridor. Additionally, the creation of bicycle routes, the organization of border markets, and the strengthening of public transportation systems are recommended.
Originality/value: This research, using the Gunn model and Likert scale analysis, provides a specialized assessment of the potential for rail tourism development along the Tabriz–Jolfa railway and proposes new strategies for the sustainable growth of this sector.
